The right application of fertilizer consists in distributing the fertilizer as accurately, evenly and uniformly as possible over the field using a fertilizer spreader. The spreader may be of the centrifugal, pendulum or pneumatic type. • With centrifugal or pendulum spreading, the fertiliser is propelled by a rotating disc or an oscillating tube, which is called broadcast spreading. • With pneumatic spreading, the spreading device is a rail that is fed mechanically, and the granule is propelled pneumatically. The most common system in France is centrifugal spreading. In that case, the fertilizer granules drop out of a hopper into a rotating disc, which has blades that speed up the flow of granules. The granules are then ejected at high speed away from the disc, and thrown on each side of the tramline. For successful spreading, you need to pay attention to • fertilizer spreader adjustment, • soil and weather conditions during spreading (low wind, dry and rut-free soil) • selection of fertilizer with appropriate physical characteristics.
Spreading with a centrifugal distributor is characterised by a dual variation of distribution: • in the movement direction of the tractor (which depends on the casting distance). • in the direction perpendicular to movement (transverse direction). In the transverse direction, distribution varies significantly: the quantity of fertilizer is smaller at the ends of the spreading width.
As a result, it is crucial for the spreading widths in each direction to overlap in order to apply the required dose. The even spreading of fertilizer thus depends on the proper overlapping of fertilizer widths: • in terms of location, with the correct overlap area • in terms of dose: dose on the way out + dose on the way back =100 % of dose In the tractor movement direction, distribution variation is low, or even nil, and depends on the tractor movement speed variation.
Fertilizer spreading machines must be adjusted for a given fertilizer with a predetermined working width. Spreader adjustments are provided in the adjustments book or online (speed, height, blade angle etc.). Important variables  Output: output = Dose in kg/ha x Working width x Movement speed  Working width: distance between two adjacent passes of the spreader. It is also the distance between the overlap points between passes.  The spreading width is increasing: e.g in France, in large crop areas (cereals, maize, rapeseed, beet and potato), spreading width has risen from an average of 24 metres in 1995 to 28 metres in 2005, with a trend towards 36 metres or even greater widths. (source COMIFER-2009) The farmer must make sure that the fertilizer spreading machine is suited to the required width and select fertilizer that is also appropriate. Fertilizers do not have the same spreading properties, and these depend on the selected width.
