In case of heavy rainfall, the terrain and the intensity of the rainfall are important. High quantities of water in a short period of time will lead to erosion of the upper soil layers in slopy areas. Thus a certain kind of nutrient loss can occur. On even, flat soil conditions there is no loss of nutrients even if rainfall occurs after fertilization.
How high are potential nitrogen losses to the air after applying a nitrate-based fertilizer?
Ammonia volatilisation is a direct loss of nitrogen, and therefore a significant environmental burden. The nitrogen losses to the air through ammonia volatilisation vary from fertilizers in line with their nitrogen form. It has long been known that urea or UAN causes higher volatilisation losses than ammonium nitrate or calcium ammonium nitrate. The official European Emission Inventory (EMEP 2013) assumes an average ammonia emission factor from urea of about 20% on arable land and grassland, compared to an average loss of around 2% for nitrate-based fertilizers. It is also a mechanism influenced by pedological, climatic and biological factors.
What amount of nutrients shall be given to rapeseed in autumn?
Before the start of winter, rapeseed should ideally have a root-collar diameter of 1 cm and 10 to 12 leaves. Until this stage, the crops have already taken up 60 to 80 kg N/ha and in more advanced stages of development, more than 100kg N/ha. The available soil nitrogen is mostly not sufficient to cover these needs as an autumn fertilization of 40 to 60 kg N/ha has proven to be useful. Compared to a single nitrogen fertilizitation, the application of NPK fertilizers with sulphur (15/15/15 +7SO3+Zn; 14/10/20 +10SO3) have shown clear advantages.
How much sulphur is recommended for rapeseed?
A crop stand with a yield of 4 tons/ha takes up 32 kg S/ha via the corn, compared to the take-up of the entire plant of 56 kg S/ha. As sulphur is hardly provided anymore from the atmosphere and the mineralisation of sulphur takes place very late (around soil temperatures of 12 C°), a sulphur fertilization to the extent of 30 to 40 kg S/ha is recommended. Sulphur can be given with S-containing NPK fertilizers and N+S fertilizers, both in autumn and spring.
Is side-dressing fertilization better than top-dressing for maize?
This question cannot be answered with a simple yes or no. Fact is that on heavy, clay sub-soils, which are slowly heated in spring time, the side-dressing fertilization is more profitable. In warm areas or in years with very fast, early growth due to warm spring weather, as well as on soils with good phosphate content, there are mostly no differences in the yields. If top-dressing is applied, maize often reacts with a widely branched root-system compared to the plants with side-dressing. In years with very dry summer months, the crops with a better root system can take up more groundwater and thus gain higher yields.
Which quantities of phosphorus should be applied to maize?
Field trials in recent years have shown that a phosphorus fertilization in the same quantity as what was removed with the harvested quantities are most profitable. Poultry manure contains approximately 5 kg/m³ phospate and around 3 kg/m³ potassium, so it is a P-emphasized farm manure. P-weaker formulas, such as 14/10/20 or 24/10 (with a high potassium supply), are the optimal nutrient supplement.
