The 1999 Protocol to reduce acidification, eutrophication and tropospheric ozone also known as the "Gothenburg Protocol", was approved by the Council, on behalf of the EU and it has been transposed into EU law.
Reduction techniques consist of the reduction of nitric oxide (NO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) in the presence of oxygen, to produce water vapour and gaseous dinitrogen. The reducing agents used are mainly ammonia (NH3) or Urea.
The reduction can be done at two temperature levels: around 950 ℃ without catalyst by non-catalytic reduction (SNCR) or around 300 ℃ with catalyst by selective catalytic reduction (SCR), as in cars, trucks, agricultural machines and work machines.
Selective Non-Catalytic Reduction (SNCR) involves the injection of ammonia water, ammonia precursor compounds or urea solution into the flue gas to reduce NO & NO2. The reaction is optimal between 830 and 1050 ° C.
