In the area of industrial solutions, we provide AdBlue®, a high-purity aqueous urea solution which helps diesel vehicles such as trucks, buses, tractors, harvesters, caterpillars, locomotives, etc. meet European emission limits. AdBlue® works in vehicles fitted with a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system, which transforms NOx into harmless nitrogen and water vapour. This technology has been applied in passenger cars as well since 2009.
The effects of global warming and climate change are becoming evident in many regions of the world. Fertilizers as such stimulate the uptake of CO2 by crops. By increasing crop yields, they reduce the need to convert new virgin land into farmland, avoiding a potential increase in annual global GHG emissions of roughly 12%. In our plants we address the concern of climate change by implementing catalysts and emission reduction technology to reduce N2O emissions from our production processes. The low-emission manufacturing of nitrogen fertilizers in Linz received recognition back in 2009 in the form of the IRIS environmental prize, awarded by the Upper Austrian government.
Building and sharing knowledge with numerous stakeholders helps to generate new ideas that contribute to sustainable growth, an improved portfolio of products and services and, more generally, the establishment of solid alliances for future development. We collaborate closely with the Francisco Josephinum, an agricultural school and research institution in Wieselburg, Austria. In addition to our joint research efforts in the areas of precision agriculture and technology development, we carry out field trials for granular and speciality fertilizers and support the initiatives of various third-party organizations, such as Fertilizer Europe. We are also a founding member of the Cool Farm Tool Alliance, which developed the Cool Farm Tool, an online greenhouse gas, water and biodiversity calculator for farming. This free-of-charge and user-friendly calculator helps farmers measure the carbon footprint of their crop and livestock products and assess the environmental impact on water and biodiversity.
Borealis has taken a significant step on the energy efficiency journey of its fertilizer production facilities by achieving ISO 50 0001 certificates (December 2016 for Grand-Quevilly, France and May 2017 for Grandpuits, France). Holding such energy management certification demonstrates the commitment of Borealis to improving its environmental impact and to the continuous optimisation of production processes.
