Winter barley nitrogen fertilization

Early nitrogen fertilization maximizes grain yield, late fertilization protein.

The right dose and timing is important for nitrogen fertilization.

Year: 2020

Crop: winter barley (two-rows and multiple rows)

Location: Wieselburg, Austria

Products: NAC 27N

Research objective

Scientific field trial with 8 treatments, 2 crop varieties and 4 replicates. All treatments received 150 kg nitrogen fertilization split into 2 or 3 doses, with 30 to 90kg of nitrogen. The aim of the study was to assess the best fertilization strategy to maximize grain yields and/or protein content.

Fertilization

Total nitrogen: 150 kg / ha

Start of growth in spring : 30, 60, or 90 kg of N/ha

2nd dose at BBCH 31: 30, 60, or 90 kg of N/ha

3rd dose at BBCH 39:  0, 30, 60, or 90 kg of N/ha

Results

  • Early nitrogen fertilization is important for high grain yields.
  • Later N fertilization maximizes protein contents.
  • The two row variety shows even higher response to early fertilization than the multiple row variety
  • Two applications were sufficient to maximize grain yields. The 3rd applications maximizes the protein content.
  • Higher grain yields with the multiple-row variety compared to the two-row variety.
